About The Red Rock Area

When the movie Pleasantville was released, the movie company held a contest to find the most ideal Pleasantville…and Pleasantville, Iowa, was chosen. Pleasantville is a charming community with great restaurants, park and downtown.

The town of Pleasantville was laid out in 1849. The first schoolhouse was built in 1847 and the term was only three months long at a cost of $2 per pupil. Early records show annual shipments from the Pleasantville area of 180,000 bushels of corn, 40,000 bushels of wheat, 30,000 bushels of oats, 765 head of cattle and 12,240 head of hogs.
