Is Tourism Important to Iowa?

People often question the value economic value of tourism and seem to be in disbelief that people travel to Iowa.  One central Iowa region is proving both these points wrong.  If you compare traveler expenditures to Marion County, in the heart of the Red Rock area, from 1996 to 2003, you will find traveler expenditures in 2003 $16 million more annually than they were in 1996.  Why?  Partnerships, promotion and product development.  Over the past eight years, partners in this county with a population of only 32,000 have invested in working together to grow their tourism industry.  Now the region that already hosts two globally known events, Knoxville Nationals and Pella Tulip Time Festival, is ready to add yet another jewel to it’s crown, the $38 million Cordova Center on the Rock.  This new center will enhance visitation to the region by expanding visitor stays, providing interactive eco-tourism programming, expanding recreational opportunities and enhancing cultural experiences.  For Marion County, this new destination will enhance the already strong $31 million tourism industry.
