LIBRARY HOSTS PROGRAM ON “KNOXVILLE’S IOWA STATE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS: 1949, ’51, ’75 & 2010” ON

On the day that the Knoxville High School basketball team plays at the 2010 Iowa State Girls’ Tournament in Des Moines, the Knoxville Historic Preservation Commission is proud to announce that it will be hosting a program on Thursday, March 25, on “Knoxville’s Iowa State Girls’ Basketball Teams: 1949, ’51, ’75 & 2010”. The free and open-to-the-public presentation will be the first of the year in a series of monthly programs relating to the history and heritage of the City of Knoxville and Marion County, and it will be held from 6:30 until 8 p.m. in the Knoxville Public Library at 213 East Montgomery Street.

According to Knoxville Historic Preservation Commission member Karen Zeck, “The idea for this historical program began when I found a program from Knoxville’s appearance in the 1975 tournament, and we thought it would be neat to invite those women to discuss their experiences from that season. Then we realized that we’d better include those that participated in 1949 and ’51, too, and, of course, this year’s girls. So, if anyone knows the whereabouts of any of those teams that qualified for State, please let me know and we will be sure to issue them invitations. Also, if anyone has memorabilia from those years, we’d love to see it, too. I can be reached via phone at 641-842-2086 or via e-mail at kzeckbs84@yahoo.com.”

Members of the Knoxville Historic Preservation Commission include Dr. Chuck Beadles, Dr. Bob Leonard, Ralph Porter, Tom Schmeh, Pennie Sommar, Cheryl Thiel and Karen Zeck. Former board member Carolyn Formanek remains active with the commission as well. This series of programs sponsored by the Historic Preservation Commission will continue on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Knoxville Public Library.
